What is really the best fit for men's dress pants?
Men's dress pants serve an important function. They make you look great in a formal setting. It may be an office, business meeting or travel, or your best friend's wedding. You want to look good but in most cases feeling comfortable will be a top priority too. It's not easy to sit all day in an office wearing a pair of pants that just seems too tight in all the wrong places.
This is where the fit comes in. A good pair of men's dress pants will sit at or slightly below the waist line, be fairly snug around hips and thighs. And at the same time will have enough room there so that when you sit down, this doesn't rearrange the rest of your wardrobe in an awkward and unpleasant way. Who wants to have to tuck in the back of the shirt every single time after sitting down or standing up! Or even worse, walking around an office oblivious to the fact that the back of your shirt is pulled out of the waistband and just dangling there! "Do I look funny?"
It seems like a lot of moving targets to get it all right with that one pair of pants you'll love to wear every day. But, it shouldn't be that way. It all boils down to a very precise science called construction of pants. Poorly constructed men's dress pants will pull all kinds of tricks on you and will make you feel uncomfortable and sometimes out of the place. Conversely, well constructed pants will make all that difference.
Here is what to look for in pant's construction especially when shopping online. You want those pants to sit comfortably without being baggy. Look for pants with what is called "back rise" to be around 15-15.5 inches (up to 16.5 inches in size 40), and what is called "front rise" around 10 inches (up to 11 inches in size 40). Next thing is the trim. Nobody wants that "good ole times" look which comes with wide legged pants. If you're shooting for that look, you can stop reading now! Otherwise, read on. That part of the dress pants' construction is controlled by the figure called "leg opening." If it's between 16-17 inches you're good. Less than that and you're going for a slim fit which may feel a little bit tight around thighs especially when you sit. More than that and you are in the "good ole times" territory. But, that's a different story!
